A year after Lehman

The ever so eloquent Barack Obama, delivered a speech in New York on September 14th to mark the anniversary of Lehman Brothers’ failure. This was more about applying a bit of presidential pressure but spoken more like propaganda seminar.

By sketching out the rationale behind his legislative proposals for a systemic-risk regulator, a new consumer-protection agency, the need for strong capital and better resolution regimes, he reminded Congress that health care is not his only priority. If anyone needed reminding, Obama chided bonus-hungry bankers for failing to learn the lessons of Lehman while emphasizing the inadequacies of the financial regulatory system.

It is the responsibility of homeowners for taking risks they could not afford. But Obama urged banks to bring financial services to those currently outside the financial system and put the consumer-protection agency first on his list of reforms. In so doing, the cost of future failures would fall on shareholders and creditors. But it is far from clear that he will force money-market funds, a major source of bank funding, to give up their promise to return their capital to investors intact.

It is also a political stunt to pledge that in the event taxpayers ever had to step in again to rescue the system, they would get every cent back. In reality, even if taxpayers have earned a 17% return on their “investment” in banks that have since bought the government out, such figures ignore the money shelled out on too-big-to-fail institutions such as AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And they fail to adjust the returns for risk, the very sin that banks committed leading to the whole unregulated financial mess.

I suspect, many will be charmed by Obama’s ability to package and deliver the message, leading them to believe that the crisis occurred because there were no regulations, that big banks will be responsible and be allowed to fail in the future, and that the proposed constraints of finance will create a new age of prosperity.

There is no denying that reform is badly needed. But baring unrealistic risk-to-reward proportions especially for bankers and investors, people will still be greedy. This is an underlying flaw in the free market system which will lead to the same crisis all over again. Banks and big credit agencies will still fail and still need saving. Then as the gap between the rich-gets-richer and the poor-gets-poorer widens, social, political and financial reform will be eminent. The cycle continues.

Patrick Swayze - sweet goodbye

Mr. Swayze died with family at his side at age 57 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January 2008. He outlived his pronogsis and even went through with plans to star in “The Beast,” a new drama series for A&E, filming a complete season while undergoing treatment.

“How do you nurture a positive attitude when all the statistics say you’re a dead man? You go to work.”
Patrick Swayze

Luxury SuperCar Show

The 2-day Luxury Super-Car Show at Plaza of Nations featured easily 70+ cars. More importantly, it featured for the first time in Canada the world’s fastest car with two v8 engines, four turbos and over 1,000 horsepower, the Buggatti Veryon.

Next in line were the makes of Lambourghinis, Mercedes and Ferraris. The McClaren clearly seems overpriced at over $600,000 with its open winged doors (not up but out). There were the discontinued Enzo, with its eye-catching bright yellow. Lambourghinis, probably about 15, had too many on display easily looking better than most of the other cars but seemingly more common. Some models that I were happy to see were the Saleen (Nice body kit), Super 7 (small and classic) and Dutch’s Spyker (old-school interior and gearshift).

On one side of the show, you have the likes of Vipers, Corvettes and other collectables that were restored with new engines or modified. There was also a little demonstration of the cellular anti-theft tracker system. And who can forget the beautiful car models which I was lucky enough to take photos with. It is hard to miss the VIP stage, which I honestly question why anyone would pay $55 more for the lounge-like setting for some refreshments and some comfortable seats.

It was a beautiful day, the sun spoiled some of the photos but overall, I was pretty satisfied and impressed with this luxury car show. One final note, the Buggatti will be available for test drive to a few privileged in a week or two. The only question is where do you find a long enough runway.

Trade conflicts and other market news

US President Barack Obama slapped steep additional duties on tire imports from China last Friday in a move that pleased domestic labour groups but drew a strong rebuke from Beijing and there were also prospects of China warning that it would retaliate by raising duties on US imports of poultry and motor vehicles.

The impact of the dispute extends well beyond tires, chickens and cars. Both governments are facing domestic pressure to take a tougher stand against the other on economic issues. But the trade battle increases political tensions between the two nations even as they try to work together to revive the global economy and combat mutual security threats, like the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea.

Mr. Obama’s decision to impose a tariff of up to 35 percent on Chinese tires is a signal that he plans to deliver on his promise to labor unions that he would more strictly enforce trade laws, especially against China, which has become the world’s factory while the United States has lost millions of manufacturing jobs. The trade deficit with China was a record $268 billion in 2008.
The bigger risk for China, economists and corporate executives have periodically warned, is that trade frictions could cause multinationals to rethink their heavy reliance on Chinese factories in their supply chains. The Chinese targeting of autos and chickens affects two industries that may have the political muscle in the United States to dissuade the Obama administration from aggressively challenging China’s policies.

While stocks and other commodities took a hit last Friday, Gold finally managed to break decisively through $1,000/oz, hitting a session high of $1,011/oz before settling at $1,004/oz, up $9 on the day, mostly due to a weaker Greenback.

Meanwhile, a Taiwan court imposed a life sentence on former President Chen Shui-Bian after convicting him of corruption, marking a watershed in the island’s turbulent political history. Chen’s wife, Wu Su-Chen was also convicted of corruption and received the same life sentence.

This week, a sequence of Retail Sales, Industrial Production and Consumer Price Index reports from major industrialized nations are scheduled for release, and they will bring the market’s focus on consumer spending, inflation, and industrial activity in search of further signs of a worldwide economic recovery.

In the last few months the world economy has been saved from a near depression due to a range of extraordinary government stimulus measures: In the U.S. and in China, and to a lesser extent in Europe, Japan and other countries, governments have pumped liquidity, slashed policy rates, cut taxes, primed demand and ring-fenced and back-stopped the financial system. All of this has worked, but at what cost? Governments have been spending and borrowing like never before, creating an over-flooded pool of cash. Moreover, the rapid changes in the political, economic and global environment have created fundamental problems that have yet to be resolved.

On CNN news chat this morning, there were many complaints on only 12% of total eligible mortgages were modified as per the incentive package. The reason for the frustrating and slow process is that the lack of real estate sales leaves the market inventory with no real value and as such, the banks have been unable to proceed readily. After dragging on for a few months, all documents will then be outdated and will be required to be updated and resubmitted. One suggested solution is to engage a mediatory party such as credit counselor or consultant.

Tango Songs

Gamer - Bloody and that's about it.

In a near-future world, Kable (Gerard Butler) is a Death Row inmate forced to participate in a simulated-world game conceived by a mad Internet billionaire, Ken Castle(Michael C. Hall, more commonly known for "Dexter"): Prisoners can have “nano-cells” implanted in their brains which allow players in the outside world to control their movements through a war-torn battlescape game called “Slayers.”

Kable is controlled by Simon, a 17-year-old (Logan Lerman) who becomes a Web star for guiding Kable to survival. But as all gamers lament, lag will kill the game or in this case, Kable a living avatar. Independence is needed for survival and victory. When Simon unplugs and Kable breaks the rules of the game and escape, he find himself in the real world trying to find his wife who has become a robot-slave and his daughter who is lost. Meanwhile a rogue group led by Ludacris contacts him and asks for his assistance to break free of Castle's leash and spoil the billionaire’s plan for world dominance.

The main downer in the movie was the shaky and confusing war action which I would assume is an attempt to present the chaotic nature of war. First-person might work in virtual reality, but it fails in motion pictures. (As has repeatedly been proven - why does no one get the message?)

It is hard to imagine humanity degrading to such limits where human lives become nothing more than entertainment or exploitation. But there are interesting concept worth exploring here: The expansion of a VR universe or development of futuristic blood sports or the way in which how technology is as dangerous as it is productive.

The storyline is filled with flaws and the flow is lagging to say the least. 4/10 for me.
